Abstract
The object of this study is to explore the transgenerational influence of the cognitive restraint in 34 mother-daughter dyads of average and below average level social-economical, referred for overweight outpatients of the endocrinology unit of a general hospital. Subject underwent a clinical interview, physical exam, biochemical, anthropometrical and psychometrical evaluation (Three Factor Eating Questionnaire (TFEQ) of Stunkard and Messick, that measured Restraint, Disinhibition, and Hunger). The results show a significant positive correlation between the mother's Restraint and the Restraint and Disihibition of their daughters. These results are discussed in terms of cultural stereotypes. It is concluded that there would exist an association of the cognitive restraint among mothers and their daughters.
