Abstract
A selective review of studies on the relationship between eating behavior and obesity is presented, stressing those related to the construct 'cognitive restraint', considered a proxy variable for a behavioral style predisposing to weight disorders. Social and cultural implications of dieting in modulating attitudes on body image and weight are examined along with studies dealing with interpersonal relations. Several hypotheses amenable to empirical study are presented.
