Professor at the Universidad Central de Chile. Researcher at the Center for Architectural, Urban, and Landscape Studies (CEAUP) at the same university since 2013. He is currently the coordinator of the Urban Biodiversity Research Group, which is part of CEAUP. He graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree with a major in Biology from the University of Chile (1982-1987) and a Doctor of Science degree with a major in Biology from the same university (1991-1997). He has been a research associate at the Pontifical Catholic University of Chile (1998-2005) and a full-time professor at the Pontifical Catholic University of Valparaíso (2007-2011). He has provided consulting services to international organizations (UNDP, UNESCO, JICA), national organizations (Ministry of Energy, Ministry of the Environment, AChEE), local organizations (municipalities, schools), and non-governmental organizations (ONG ENTORNO). He currently teaches ecology and vegetation in the Landscape Architecture program at the Central University of Chile and has directed undergraduate and graduate projects and theses. His research focuses on urban biodiversity conservation and urban ecology. In his area of expertise, he has led research projects, authored several publications in mainstream journals, written book chapters, and edited books. He also has a strong interest in environmental education and develops educational materials to support school teachers. Over the past five years, he has formed research teams and networks in conjunction with the following projects: “Model of green roofs with native flora in cities in central Chile” (ANID/IDeA ID21I10028, 2022), “Efficient gardens for public spaces in the RM” (FIC, BIP No. 40044421-0), and “Bio-urban refuges: Model for a comprehensive approach to evaluating the effectiveness of nature-based solutions for water-sensitive urban design as a strategy for adapting to climate change” (ANID/IDEA IDID23I10043 2023).
