Gabriela Zapata-Román is an economist and holds a PhD in Development Policy from the University of Manchester, United Kingdom. She is a researcher at the Center for Economy and Society and a faculty member at the School of Economics, Government and Communications at Universidad Central de Chile, as well as an Honorary Research Fellow at the Global Development Institute, University of Manchester. She has worked as a consultant for international institutions such as the United Nations University World Institute for Development Economics Research (UNU-WIDER), the German Institute of Development and Sustainability (IDOS), the United Nations Research Institute for Social Development (UNRISD), and the World Bank. She was the lead researcher of the FONDECYT project “Structural Transformations and Their Effects on Inequalities in the Chilean Labor Market” and co-researcher of the COVID-ANID project “National Survey on Informal Care at Home (ENCIC)”. She also participated as a researcher in the Gender Autonomies Research Hub (NIAG) and in the R&D project “Debt and Social Mobility” at Universidad Central. She is currently collaborating in the UNU-WIDER project Social Protection in the Global South. Her research focuses on structural transformations and inclusive growth, as well as inequalities in the labor market, education, and gender. She also works on inequality of opportunity and intergenerational mobility.
